To make things even more complicated with the story, there's reference to "Bass" and "Proto" units (I didn't see a bio description for Mega Man...). So maybe it is more of a simulator that Light, Wily, and Cossack got trapped in.
Well, the story you guys have read is not the final story. It also never elaborates on it besides saying you unlocked data, which probably supports they're fake.
@TailsMK4 : You see, each robot unit has more than one, answering why you see other Mega Mans and such. Adrian preferred it that way. Now, the main three heroes that everyone has is real....maybe? You know what, I'm really confused.
