Anyone who's known me for a time knows that inspiration strikes me from the strangest of places at the most unsuspecting of times. This one struck me from nowhere whilst fighting as my "Buster Expert" Roll, which I've passingly mentioned a few times here. Alas, it's only a partially true story—the described events didn't actually happen in my play time. Anyway, without further ado, please enjoy this short piece I haphazardly put together, "Queen of Busters."
---
It was a life I quickly adjusted to. I was in a simulator, as I understood it; nothing about it was real, except the pain of getting shot. Dr. Light called me a "support unit;" supposedly my role was only to make the fighting easier for others. But then, when I made a mistake, Mega Man fell in the heat of combat, and I had to pick up the slack. And then, when Wily needed help, they dragged me off in chains to help them. And then Cossack liberated me—and he wanted my help, too. By the time I had finally gotten back to Dr. Light, I could no longer qualify as a support unit. They started calling me the "Buster Expert," on account of the six different variations of Buster I had equipped. From there, I guess it sort of...snowballed out of control.

A transmission came in over the communicators the other day, from one heavily damaged Proto Man. With his broken visor and cracked glasses, it was the closest I'd come to seeing his eyes. "Who is it this time?" I asked, not even bothering to rise from my chair yet. "Super strength," he replied, "Guts and Dive on the same team. You'd better watch out for—" I heard no more of his message; I had already run off to the teleporters, quickly assembling and entering the indicated one.

I fell through the sky for a second or two, before landing on a metal platform of sorts. I was on a metal terrace, trailing down the side of the mountain, most of them filled with water. Without warning, Dive-Man broke the surface of a pool and landed a few feet away, while Guts-Man punched a hole in the mountainside and emerged, marching over to his side.

I could tell from their facial expressions that only one of them had heard of me—Dive-Man looked slightly nervous, while Guts-Man was grinning like an idiot at the sight of me. "I was expecting Proto Man's backup to be weak, but...really?! Just Roll?!" He laughed and laughed his hearty mountain man's laugh, as if he had told some clever joke. "Hey, blondie! Where's the rest of your team?! Was there a teleporting accident or something?!" He was the only one laughing.

With one swift motion, I gripped my hair bow and removed it from my hair, letting it blow away in the breeze. My long, golden hair flowed freely, and some locks fell over my left eye. "I am my entire team."

Guts-Man laughed again. "A sacrificial lamb, then! As if giving us a free kill will make us any more merciful in the next wave!" Dive-Man was nervously tapping his shoulder, trying to advise him against saying things of that nature, but he was all but deaf to him. After a while of laughing and chuckling to himself, he finally stopped, and stooping to the ground, scooped up a giant boulder and dropped it in front of himself. "Fine then, shrimp! Let's see you get around this with your little pea shooter!"

I shook my right hand, getting out my buster cannon. Cossack's won't be necessary, I thought to myself, I'm already faster than both of them. Neither will Mega's—he could throw forty boulders at me, and I'd still be standing. With that quick decision, I started charging the Wily Buster.

No matter how many times I charged it, I never stopped loving to charge the Wily Buster. It began with a big jolt of energy inside the buster cannon itself, then spread throughout, stimulating the entire body with randomly placed electric shocks. The reddish energy coarsed throughout me, and I kept my eyes locked dead ahead, looking straight at Guts-Man.

He seemed a bit surprised that I had not decided to run after seeing him lift that boulder. "Uh...yeah?! Well, you'll be running once I hit you!" He raised his arm, and fired a single rocket-propelled fist from it. "Eat this! Hard Knuckle!"

The fist sailed through the air and struck me straight in the face. I could have dodged it, but why would I bother? The fist fell to the ground with an unceremonious clunk, and revealed that it had not even left a dent in my face (Yet the next attack he launched might, as the fist had done a bit of damage to my external shielding system). "Um..." I heard Guts mutter.

That was all the invitation I needed to attack. I snapped my buster cannon into position, aimed around Guts-Man, and fired the Wily Buster at Dive-Man. The excess electricity left me, but left its stimulus behind; and as the bright red sparking shot charged into him, he screamed with agony as it punched through his armor. I could tell from the way he was sparking miserably, clutching at broken pieces of his armor, that another shot would be all it took to finish him.

"Hey, blondie! I'm talkin' to you!" Guts-Man had picked up his boulder, and proceeded to hurl it at me. Somehow, despite his previous display of futility, he still thought I could be crushed. The rock sailed into me, smashing into pieces against my once-delicate frame and kicking up clouds of dust. When it cleared, they could see I still stood—bruised in a couple places, my dress covered in a thin layer of dust, but otherwise, standing, as if I had not even been hit.

"I...wha...how?!" Guts-Man bellowed, as I began charging my Wily Buster again. "Dive, do you have this chick's weakness?!"

"No, I don't! And besides, even if I did, it wouldn't matter, because she's the—"

"Too bad! You're up anyway!" Guts-Man jumped up and over his companion, leaving Dive on the front line to face me instead. He still was not smiling, and was still clutching at his armor from his previous injury. I could almost feel his futility in the way he shot me with his Dive Missile. It hurt even less than the Hard Knuckle or Super Arm did, even though he had a superior weaponry system; it was as if he knew he couldn't beat me, and was unwilling to try. A rush of air accompanied the firing of the Wily Buster, and I watched, unflinching, as it plowed straight through him. Make no mistake, his death cries were no music to my ears; it was only the busting that made me feel good. I believe I heard him mutter something like "I feel seasick..." through the screams as he exploded, breaking back down into harmless bits of data.

Guts-Man roared with anger at the sight of his companion exploding. "You killed him! By the time I'm done with you, you're going to be ten times as dead!" In a surprising feat of agility, he ran forward like a charging bull, and grabbed me by the leg. After a good windup, he hurled me into the mountainside, kicking up more dust. This one, I admit, did hurt, but I was still far from dead. At this point, I might have been able to use Disco's, Rhythm's, or my own buster to patch myself up, but once I defeated Guts, which I figured I could do soon, I could head home and get fully healed. Once again, as the dust cleared, I began charging my Wily Buster again. From the look of shock on his face, I could tell he was finally getting the picture.

He tried to flee, but there was really nowhere for him to flee to, and besides, I was too quick. I gave chase with a wild speed, and tackled him to the ground. Eventually, I regained my footing on top of his back. The stimulation from the Wily Buster was becoming so great, I was beginning to get weak in the knees—if it was a drug, I was totally addicted—yet even with my shaky footing, I managed to finish the job. I pressed down on Guts-Man's back with one foot, pointing my buster at his head. "Say my name," I ordered coldly.

"Blondie," he replied, in a last act of defiance.

"I said, say my name!" I stomped even harder, cracking his armor.

He did not respond right away, but when I did, I had clearly broken him. "...You are Roll, the Queen of Busters..."

"You'd better believe I am."

The last thing I remember about that particular battle was the bang my buster made as I fired upon Guts-Man, finishing him in a single blow.

I was trying to imply that they were both data copies, with the line about how Dive-Man "breaks back down into harmless bits of data." Why do you ask?

Wow, surprised I impressed people to this magnitude with this work. Not that it's bad, by any stretch; I don't post anything that's bad. It's just not very refined. I wrote this in, like, an hour, tops, with frequent breaks. I guess Roll being brutal with a twinge of sadism as well as powerful is a real eye-catcher.

It's not the first time I've written for this Roll (Who is appropriately nicknamed "Battle-High Roll"); she originated from a dramatic narration of an MM8BDM single-player run I did as Roll. I guess my time playing MMRPG reminded me of her a bit, so I brought her in and wrote for her again. She's very fun to write for, for reasons not even I can pin. I've been considering doing more with her as a character lately...

I wonder what Adrian thinks of all this.

Great job with the writing, I just felt kinda weird about Roll being so blinded by the power, I thought she would be more careful and caring... But I don't know much about any Mega Man storylines anyway. The read was really enjoyable (even with mixed feels) and looking forward to seeing some more writing by you.

Afaik Adrian doesn't log in every day, but he still visits the site every day and reads the posts. Considering that the experience exploit was fixed the next day it had been reported on. He hasn't probably been very happy with all the bugs and exploits found this week, also work.

No, you are right about that; there's not a lot to support this incarnation of Roll's existence. Her defining canon characteristic is her dream of opening a hospital and helping the people of the world (Her MM&B card describes her as "helpful but cowardly," and I basically ignore the latter—most people seem to, anyway). Basically, the idea behind Battle-High Roll is that she's placed on the front lines by circumstances beyond her control, and as she fights, she grows to love fighting, almost to the point of addiction.

I know, I'm strange.

I absolutely LOVE this! Reading this totally made my day, and you added narrative and reasons to things I hadn't even considered in the world of the prototype. I love the personality you gave Roll and the way you wrote her, but even more so I love the way you've fleshed out the setting of the story in ways that I have so far failed to convey as eloquently. This is seriously cool and I look forward to any and all other stories you do like this - seeing the mechanics and scenarios of the MMRPG written into a short-story like this brings so much joy to my heart. Thank you. ^_^ You might also like to know I shared your story on our Facebook page the other day - that's how much I liked it!

Woah, cool! I...didn't even know MMRPG had a Facebook page, actually! I'm really honored to hear that you like it. It means a lot to me. Most of what I do is an experiment, and hearing that it worked is always nice, but from the source of my inspiration is something even greater.
