For the last two weeks I've been silently coding in the background and now I'm finally able to show everyone the fruits of my labour - say hello to the new Community discussion boards!

I've long since wanted to install some kind of commenting and/or forum software for the website but was having a hard time choosing which one to use and how it would be integrated. After reviewing the pros and the cons of my options, I decided to write my own code from scratch and customize it to work seamlessly with the existing save files. Now, you can log into your game file from the main website (top right) and comment on any updates or discussion threads posted in the community.

Notable features include guest commenting and with customizable post avatars. To change your post avatar from the default Mega Man sprite, click the "save game" link in the main menu and look for the "Robot Avatar" option - you can select any robot you've unlocked in the main game and changes are retroactive (old post are updated with new avatar choices). You can also select the sprite's frame on a post-by-post basis - allowing you to have more expressive posts with a wide variety of poses.

I hope everyone enjoys and takes advantage of this new feature, and let me know if you have any questions!

As you can see, I have used a "damage" sprite for this comment by selecting it during the comment process. The selected frame will be remembered even if you change your avatar in the future. Click the "edit" option to edit any of your existing comments, or the "delete" option to remove mistakes. This post, for example, has been edited at least once for demonstration.

As you can see from the form below, there is a 500 character limit for comments and all HTML is removed. This is to help prevent spam and encourage brief, content-rich discussion. On the plus side, basic formatting can be used for bold, italic, or underlined text as well as basic link functionality and a fun little type colourizor. Look below the comment box for details.

This is an anonymous guest post. All guest posts will use the same default "shadow robot" avatar and cannot edit of delete their own posts. Any spam posts will be moderated and deleted by the website admins, so do not worry about reporting them.

Awesome comment system! I love that I can use any unlocked robot as an avatar - obviously I like the cold ones. :D And how cool is it that I can easily wrap any text in colourful type tags? Rainbow power!

As you can see above, comments can be deleted but there will always be a record to show where it was and who originally posted it to the thread.

I've updated the community pages a bit visually and added some new behaviours for the (New!) markers and how the website tracks their read/unread status. Viewing a thread now marks it as read and prevents it from having the (New!) marker (until something else is posted) and the "Community" link in the main menu will now also have a (New!) marker if there are any unread threads. Logging out marks everything as read for next time. :) Thanks for the suggestions, Brorman!
