This was going to be a comment for the 'Weapon Energy' news post, but I've decided to open a new thread about it as it's very off-topic to that post.

If we would want co-op or PvP, I believe this game would have to be packaged into a program structure of its own. This would make it very hard to get it as flexible as it is now to work on the many different platforms it supports. Co-op & PvP would bring a lot more players but where would they all play? Extra servers would be needed, maybe some players wouldn't mind hosting for others or if this game gets popular enough, Adrian could start something like a 'kickstarter' to get the funds to buy servers dedicated to the game.
So I believe co-op or PvP is a possibility and not off the table completely. Am I right about any of this Adrian?

Maybe Co-Op and PvP could be done with one player creating his own server, and the other players joining the server, kinda like Minecraft.

I would like to chime in and say that MMX100 is correct about several things, but maybe a little too... optimistic about another. :S

In order to have PvP or co-op, many changes would have to made to the structure of the game and it would be very different than it is now. The language that it's written in, the platforms it currently supports, and my ability to update it as quickly and easily as I do would no longer be possible with the needed changes. Not to mention the incredible amount of actual work and time it would take seems... like a nightmare. I am already spending a large chunk of my personal time (read: all of it) programming this game and the idea of supporting multiplayer as well... I may die before I get the chance to finish!

That being said, the dream of PvP and/or co-op is one I share with all of you and think it would be super cool... but I cannot bring that dream to fruition for a very, very long time if ever so please understand that it's not on the table right now. I will revisit the option once the game is considered "done", but at the moment not even a kickstarter could help (besides, I'm not sure how legal it would be).

I hope this doesn't ruin the experience for anyone and I thank you all for playing even without synchronous multiplayer. Besides, more "asynchronous" multiplayer options might be added to the game in their place, so it might not be a terrible thing in the end. The restrictions of the NES forced developers of the 80s to come up some of the coolest tricks and gameplay mechanics in the industry, so I'm sure working within the constraints of the browser will have similar effects on the prototype. :)

@ Adrian
but maybe a little too... optimistic about another

Yeah I happen to be that sometimes. I addressed this topic as I'm sure it is one that many players have thought about at one point or another. Of course I'm sure that this feature is completely off the table right now as this game is still a prototype. There are other more pressing matters to program & de-bug. But just maybe when the prototype is a completed game and only special-extra characters remain to be worked on, maybe that feature can be taken a look at.

I'd also like to say that this prototype is amazing as is already. As I'm sure it has fooled many players (including me) at some points to feel not like a prototype anymore but like the full game already. If it is this great already, surely the complete game without synchronous multiplayer will still be a blast (pun mercilessly intended).
