It is the year 20XX. And humans... No longer exist. In their place are industrial humanoid robots known as Robot Masters, and the Mechas that live alongside them in peace. However, peace doesn't always last... A threat to the world of Robot Masters looms above, and it is up to an unlikely crew of robots to save the day... But are they up to the task? Are YOU up to the task? The world's fate rests in your hands...
After the release of Retro Pikachu's remake of Tails' Lab Defense, I decided I wanted to make a new roleplay myself, in hopes of reviving the MMRPG roleplaying community. And with the release of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, I decided "hey, why not?"How to Play: (Or, in other words, "Beta just copy-pasted the rules from Retro's Lab Defense lol")
Ok, so you know how PMD games would have you take one step per turn, your partner would follow behind, and all the enemies would then take a step? Yeah, no, let's toss that turn system out the window. Being only able to take one step at a time might work for a video game, but for a forum roleplay? Yeah, WAY too sluggish. So, yeah, we'll be using some different mechanics. And, ok, sure, I may have stol- er, borrowed, the mechanics of Lab Defense, but hey, if the system works, it works. And besides, I've added and removed some things to make it a bit more Mystery Dungeon-esque...
Your journeys will take place in randomly assembled maps called Mystery Dungeons. The maps will be based off of Lab Defense, however, because I'm not going to bother trying to make an entire Mystery Dungeon map on my own. Too much effort for a simple forums roleplay.
Each robot on the field can take a certain number of steps at a time. Afterwards, they can use an attack, use an item in their inventory, or they can simply just wait. However, you CANNOT move after attacking or using an item. After all players have taken their turn, the enemies will have THEIR phase.
To make a move, either leave a reply in the thread or ping me in the Roleplay channel on Discord. If you don't make a move after ~24 hours of the start of your phase, your turn will be automated. At a certain point, however, I will stop automating your turn and just plain set you on idle; Believe it or not, this rule is NOT set up to have me play the game for you.
There are two kinds of allies: Teammates and Players. Teammates are other robots who are part of your Team, and are to be controlled by you as well. Teammates will follow you to the next floor once the floor's objective is complete. You may only have 4 teammates in the dungeon at a time, with two spaces reserved for the leader and partner. That may change in the postgame, however. On the other hand, there are Players. These allies are, of course, other users and their teammates who happen to be in the same dungeon and on the same floor as you. As they are from a different team, however, they will NOT follow you to the next floor.I may or may not make some exceptions during the introduction phase.
When you gain a level, your stats will increase, and you may or may not gain a new Weapon depending on your stat boons and your core types. You will gain EXP from defeating foes and clearing missions. Defeating foes will ALSO grant your Teammates half of the EXP gained from defeating them.
While some floors will require you to find the stairs in order to progress, there are also several other objectives for you to accomplish. We'll be discussing what some of these objectives may be in the future.
Character Creation:
Are you a human being sent into our world to save us all, or just another robot who lives in the world naturally? The answer is, that's for you to decide. Either way, I'm not going to do some PMD-style quiz to determine what Robot Master you are. Why? Because just giving you a small handful of options for who you'll be is absolutely lame. Instead, you get to make the decision of who you are- and who your partner will be- for yourself. And yes, you will be required to make TWO characters instead of just one.
Here is the character sheet:
Team Name:
Name: Icon: HP: WE: ATK: DEF: SPD:
Core: Subcore: Weakness: Resistance:
And now, an in-depth look at what these are:
Team Name- The name of your team. This has been added after the Introduction phase, because we’re not going through it again. This wasn’t a part of it to begin with for story reasons.
Name- The name of the robot, obviously. Icon- The icon the robot you'll be using. Refer to the [robot] or [mecha] formats for use of their mugshots (custom mugs are welcome, too, through use of the [image] formatting).
Stats: You will have a total of 25 points to spend on 5 different stats. Spend them wisely. Or don't. Your choice. Just know that you can't spend any more than 25.
HP- Health Points, also known as Energy. How much damage you take before you fall. Each point spent on this stat is 2 HP. WE- Weapon Energy. It is the cost of your Special Weapons. Replenishes 1 WE on each turn. Each point spent on this stat is 2 WE. ATK- Attack. Increases how much damage you deal. DEF- Defense. Decreases how much damage you take. SPD- Speed. Determines how far you can move. Each step is 2 SPD.
In addition to the points given to the stats, you can add one Boon and Bane to them. A Boon will add 2 extra points to the stat, and will increase its growth. It also controls what kind of passive Special Weapons you can obtain, as well as your Ability 2. A Bane will remove 2 points from that stat, and will slow down its growth. You can NOT have one over the other.
Core- Your main Core type. Determines the kind of elemental Special Weapons you can obtain, as well as your Ability 1. Subcore- Your secondary Core type. Also determines the kind of elemental Special Weapons you can obtain, but to a lesser extent (meaning you can only obtain the buster weapons and Tier 1 weapons of this type).
Do note that you can use ANY type within Prototype EXCEPT for Copy Core, which has been replaced with Neutral. In addition, your partner cannot be the same Core or Subcore type as you.
Weakness- Attacks of this type deal more damage. Resistance- Attacks of this type deal less damage.
You MUST have a Weakness and Resistance. Failure to apply this will cause me to assign one to you based on how I personally feel they should be.
The following is determined by your stat boon and Core type.
Weapons: Your Special Weapons that can be utilized after moving. You can only have 8 Special Weapons at a time. In addition, you will be given a singular Basic Attack that costs no Weapon Energy and take up no Special Weapon slots. Abilities: Your special abilities that will activate under specific conditions. You will only have 2, but they can be changed through the use of specific items.
And this LAST "stat" is determined by your progression through the roleplay.
Rank: The Ranking of your Team, which can be raised by completing missions. Ranking up grants you more inventory spaces for items, increases the number of missions available for everyone, and may even gift you some other rewards.
A detailed list of basically everything you will come across in this game. There are some of which that are currently locked (kept private), and some information in the database is hidden. Right now, the Players, Weapons, Abilities, Enemies, Items, Shops, and Dungeons databases are available.Current Status:
Gentle Countryside, F1
Objective: Reach the Stairs!Maniacal Hideaway, F1
Objective: Reach the Stairs!Wintry Forefront, F1
Objective: Reach the Stairs!Richly Courtyard, F1

Phantasm moves 2 spaces left and uses Buster Charge. Shired moves 2 spaces right, and fires his Shield Buster at Sergeant Man.
You think you're so smooth, huh. Well you're ALSO just a third wheel, and you will NEVER be able to do ANYTHING major in the grand scheme of things. Face it, you're the weakest person in your whole unit. You're so weak that you barely even beat a single two-phase robot, even three on one. Hell, you can't even COWER properly! This is like, the 15th time an enemy discovered your hiding spot! In fact, I bet that if faced with a genocidal maniac that kills literally EVERYONE they meet, you'd run the hell away! That's the exact OPPOSITE of what a tank, or ANY kind of soldier worth their bolts, would do. And another thing? The only reason you're winning is because you're 3 levels above us. If my team was level 5, even I could probably one-shot you. That's how weak you are in comparison to literally anyone else, and you're NEVER going to catch up to any proper rescue team in terms of strength, skill, rank, wisdom, or pretty much any beneficial aspect.
Story Mission Complete! ... ...You done? Yeah, yeah, I'm done... You DO realize that, even if people KNEW we exist, they won't even care, right? We'd just be another pair of regular faces in this world. WHAT!? Why didn't you say anything before!? We could've just watched over Beta in the town instead of fight in the middle of these flowery fields against a bunch of people we don't even know! I DID tell you already! TEN TIMES! But you NEVER LISTEN! Alright, FINE. I'm SORRY for not listening to you. I'm SORRY for attacking these guys for no reason. I'm SORRY for dragging you INTO said fight. Now get off my case about it! I'm going back into that town and buying myself an E-Tank... And they'd better NOT be sold out again.
Ninja Man leaves the area.
...I apologize for his behavior... Here. I brought these from another dime- err, from home. (At least, I hope these'll have the same effect here as they do in any other universe...)
All teams (except for the inactive Brash team) receive a Super Pellet!
Now, if you excuse me, I should follow him before he causes any MORE trouble...
Sergeant Man leaves the area to catch up with Ninja Man.
Good job, guys! That's this mission, this dungeon, AND this chapter of the story cleared! ...And since this was a STORY mission completed, all teams involved will gain more EXP than they would for regular missions! (Even the one who didn't really get the chance to really do anything, but NOT the team that had been doing absolutely nothing the whole past few floors.)
Retro earns 50 EXP Carl earns 50 EXP Blast Man earns 50 EXP Enker earns 50 EXP Chemical Man earns 25 EXP Universal Man earns 25 EXP Phantasm earns 25 EXP Shired earns 25 EXP PROTOTYPE-001 earns 25 EXP Laser Joe earns 25 EXP
LEVEL UP!
Blast Man has reached Level 3! Enker has reached level 3! Shired has reached level 3! PROTOTYPE-001 has reached level 3! Laser Joe has reached level 3!
Unfortunately, there is not enough space to showcase stat increases and whatnot, so you'll have to look into the Players Database for that. In fact, there's more to cover, but I'll need to put it on the next post.
...Now, then. Since you have completed the tutorial, you are now members of the Robot Academy! ...Except... You'll need Team Names to make it official. I shall let you come up with those. Please do that BEFORE travelling to any future dungeons. (@Soren : I believe you already came up with the name "Blue Star"?)
...As well as that, we'll need to talk about your facilities... the Shops.
Auto's and Reggae's Shops Auto and Reggae share the same shop (oh the horror) where they sell items. Auto will sell your regular items- consumables like pellets, capsules, and cures- while Reggae sells more special items- hold items, like modules, circuits, and cores, as well as other items like codes, Weapon Chips (WC), and Ability Upgrades (AU). Some of these listed items, you will find as this roleplay progresses. However, they have a rather limited stock based on the number of players and their team ranks. However, every completed mission, story-based or otherwise, they WILL restock supplies. You will find what they are currently stocking within the new Shop Database. You can also now find item prices, as well as the Module items and the Super Pellet, in the Items Database.
Kalinka's Storage Meanwhile, Kalinka has set up a Storage Unit. If you don't want to lose any items or bolts when defeated, come here to store them! The items you store will be placed within a more secret Doc, so if you are ever unsure about what you've got in the storage, just send me a PM on the forums, or a DM on the Discord. (And I know what you may be thinking, and here's the answer to your question: this world's Kalinka is a robot.)
...Aaaaand that's it. For now, anyways... There are more shops to be unlocked along the way, but we haven't exactly reached a point where it would be necessary... Well, except for one of them, but it's something that is unlocked later, anyways... I think you probably know what it is.
And with that... You're on your own. I'll probably leave out some tips and such every now-and-then, but from here on out, you will no longer be following each other to dungeons. ...Unless you happen to pick the same dungeon, anyways. Whether or not you'll choose to help out through the missions, go out and train, or simply just explore dungeons, it's all up to you... ...Though, maybe something will happen after the successful completion of 3 missions...NOTICE!
New Dungeons can be explored! You can now travel to Abandoned Warehouse, Arctic Jungle, and Oil Wells! (The Dungeons Database can now also be viewed.)
You can now recruit new teammates! Those enemies you have been beating before? They can now join your team! Do keep in mind you can have only 4 members in a dungeon, though... Hm? Oh, yeah, I increased it to 4 now, to match with older PMD games (and to make a certain item you currently don't know about or can access actually have purpose). You're welcome. Also, recruitment rates have been added to the enemies database, as well as the data for Sergeant Man and Ninja Man. And yes. You could've recruited Ninja and/or Sergeant... But unfortunately, nobody has reached that mark. But who knows... Maybe they'll return at some point...
Team Names shall be added to the sign-up sheets! This is moreso for future players, because we're not going through the tutorial level again.
Missions are now available! We now have missions! These can be viewed on the main post, but will be displayed between Story Missions. ...Except for this one, for I am out of character space.
enker, i think you should have rolling cutter Enker Get Equipped With Rolling Cutter! thanks, blast man! i know the reason why i wanted you to be part of my team!

...
Where do you think you're going?
To the Abandoned Warehouse? We weren't getting any signal before, but it appears the coordinates for a select few places have appeared. Wouldn't it make sense to go there first?
You seem to think you have any sort of say in the matter. Allow me to clarify.
This is no game. This is no quest. This is no adventure. I am your superior and you will wait until MY orders and will not make any decisions without MY counsel. Have I made myself clear?
*sigh* Crystal, Commander.
PROTOTYPE and Laser Joe make their way to Abandoned Warehouse to complete the Rescue Sniper Joe mission.
Edit: Oh yeah, they need a name. Team Prototype to or whatever.

Phantasm's Team, now called Team Fractal Requiem, head over to the Mission Board or wherever the missions are posted.
Okay, let's see... First mission's got us returning to the intro field for... a Guard Module? Nah, thumbs down, all the way. Those thing don't even let you boost your stats. You know, there's quite a few missions over in this "Oil Wells" area. Alright then, but if it's not worth anything, I'm gonna turn them do-
Phantasm then eyes the mission from Fake Man that request to have Cut Man beaten up.
...Oh, HELL yes. Listen up, Shired! We're gonna take ALL these Oil Wells missions! After all, Cut Man's in the area, and somehow also the person requesting that we get him a Speed Capsule and a Friendship Module! And this time... Retro ain't gonna stop us from getting that Rolling Cutter.
Team Fractal Requiem takes ALL the Oil Wells missions that are posted, and heads over to Oil Wells.

@Soren, RedBomber, and Retro Pikachu :
Objective: Rescue Sniper Joe! (Floor 1)
Player’s Turn
(Also, @Soren: I used Imgur for the shopkeeper mugs. Also, while I have you, you never chose who you wanted to give Rolling Cutter to.)@RotomSlashBlast :
Objective: Defeat the outlaw Cut Man! (Floor 2) Objective: Find the lost Speed Capsule! (Floor 3) Objective: Find the lost Friendship Module! (Floor 4)
Player’s Turn
...It appears this dungeon is covered in Oil tiles. Oil tiles will slow down movement speed, making it to where 1 step on Oil costs 4 SPD, rather than the normal 2... Unless you are Earth Core, that is. Also, be careful, The use of Flame Core attacks on or against foes standing on an Oil tile will burn up connected Oil tiles AND deal Flame Core damage to all robots on those tiles.@pokeepoo :
Objective: Rescue Metall Classic! (Floor 2)
Player’s Turn
...Meanwhile, YOU are faced with Water tiles. Water tiles will act like walls to everyone UNLESS you are Water Core. And yes, those with Hover ignores these tiles, as well.

Phantasm moves 1 space us and fires a Break Laser at the Big Eye! Shired moves one space left, and two spaces up, then slaps the same Big Eye in the proverbial face with a Regular Attack!

As I am right now, you'll get there faster than me. take the Mecha to our right, I will..deal... with this thing next to me. Be quick.
Roger that.
PROTOTYPE moves one space to the right. and charges his Shield Buster at Big Eye 1. Laser Joe moves three spaces to the right and uses his Break Laser on Flea 1
Tch! An inconvenience it is that Most robots here are Impact core.
